Jon Shayne

Jon Shayne considers his most valuable lessons on investing to have come from his study of the records of investors he admires, especially Warren Buffett and Bill Ruane. Jon founded Shayne & Co, LLC, one of our two predecessor firms, in 1994. His prior financial experience was as a corporate finance analyst at an investment bank in New York. With Bill Jacobs, he is the co-President and is co-owner of Shayne & Jacobs, LLC, which they created in 2023.

Jon is a graduate of Vanderbilt Law School and Harvard College. He co-wrote an article on securities law, “Inefficiency in the Market for Initial Public Offerings,” with the late Larry Soderquist. The article appeared in the Vanderbilt Law Review in 1995.

He is a past board member of University School of Nashville, and The Ensworth School. At Ensworth, he served as Treasurer and chair of the finance committee.

As a hobby, Jon writes, and occasionally performs, satirical songs. Most of these have been about finance and economics. He does this under the assumed name, “Merle Hazard.” The songs have been used in segments of the PBS NewsHour and at the American Economic Association annual convention.

Jon is married, with two grown sons. His wife, Ann Shayne, co-created Modern Daily Knitting, which publishes books, hosts events, and is known widely among knitters.
